Display and design

There are three sizes - S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. These come with a 6.2-inch, 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively.
The front of the phone is almost covered by the screen with the exception of a small ‘hole-punch’ at the top centre.

As with all Samsung devices, the screen is very punchy and will be excellent when catching up on your favourite TV series on Netflix, playing a game or simply just browsing your social media feeds.
The screen also has a whopping 120Hz refresh rate. In layman’s terms, this means that a different image can display on the screen 120 times per second. This has increased from 60Hz last year. This will make for really smooth scrolling around on the phone and gameplay (if you’re into that).
Another thing to make mention of is the placement of the power button. This was one of the main sore points I found with the S10, where the power button was awkwardly placed too high towards the top of the phone. With the S20 series, this has been corrected.
Stereo speakers also make a return and are very clear and loud.

Battery

The S20, S20+ and new S20 Ultra all have large capacity batteries which, in theory, should offer some very solid battery life to cover our busy schedules. While we had a brief hands-on with all of them, they were surprisingly light and quite nice to hold in the hand - which was a concern of mine.
For those into the tech specs, the respective battery capacities of each are as follows.
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 - 4000mAh
  • Samsung Galaxy S20+ - 4500mAh
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra - 5000mAh
However, battery life is always subjective and can be affected by a number of things - and one of those is the refresh rate on the display. The other is the inclusion of 5G technology in all the models.
Fast charging of up to 45W is supported on the S20 Ultra however a 25W charger is bundled with the devices. This means to get the faster-charging speeds on the S20 Ultra you’ll need to make an additional purchase.
We’ll be testing all this out once we get to play with the device in more detail.

Cameras

On the back, we see a very different camera setup from the S10 series - not too dissimilar to Apple’s iPhone - with at least four rear cameras and the front-facing camera. If the iPhone had what was known as a ‘hotplate’ design to house the cameras, Samsung has gone the full oven.
The camera system has been completely redesigned and is said to be the biggest upgrade since the Galaxy S7 in 2016.

The star of the show is what Samsung is calling ‘Space Zoom’. This is the name for a mix of hybrid optic zoom and artificial intelligence to ensure the photo you’re taking is the best it can be. There is no doubt that the cameras on these phones will be exceptional.
There is a but.
‘Space Zoom’ is only on the high-end ‘Ultra’ model and comes with 100 times zoom. The S20 and S20+ can still do 30 times zoom.

Camera in focus

There are loads of improvements when it comes to video too with the ability to now shoot in 8K resolution. And even if you’re taking video, you can also use a feature called ‘8K Video Snap’ that allows for hi-res photos to be captured directly from the video. That’s pretty cool.
Speaking of cool things, Samsung’s new ‘Single Take Mode’ is another feature that caught our eye. When taking a photo at 10-second clip will be taken at the same time - giving you options on which photo and frame is the better take. This even works on video as well and allows for rewinding and running both forwards and backwards.
If you’re feeling adventurous, Samsung also has a ‘pro mode’ for video with improved ‘super steady’ shots and night hyperlapse modes.
You can really tell that there has been a clear focus on camera improvements, and that’s certainly welcome.
The camera is so good that early hands-on reviews are calling it the “world’s best” in a current smartphone.

S20 Colours

Mobile phones are very personal devices and we’ve seen a real shift in making them stand out more and more from others in the market. And having different colour choices is something that has proven to be a real winner in the smartphone race.
The photos don’t do these any justice in showing off what they actually look like in person. They are quite striking and modern looking.
There are four colours to choose from.
  • Cosmic Black (S20+ and S20 Ultra)
  • Cosmic Grey (S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra)
  • Cloud Blue (S20 and S20+)
  • Cloud Pink (S20 only)
